Mercedes-Benz EQS and EQE Problems: Do Electric Vehicle Defects Qualify for California Lemon Law?

Buying a Mercedes-Benz EQS or EQE means you are buying a luxury electric vehicle loaded with technology. You expect a smooth, quiet ride, impressive range, and sophisticated features, but EV problems can be different from those of a traditional gas-powered vehicle.

And when those problems keep coming back after visits to the dealership, you may start asking an important question: Do electric vehicle defects qualify for California Lemon Law?

Many times, the answer is yes. California’s Lemon Law can protect consumers whose vehicles develop substantial warranty defects that the manufacturer cannot repair after a reasonable number of attempts. That can include Mercedes-Benz EQS and EQE models. Here is a look at some of those problems.

Charging Problems

For an electric vehicle, the ability to charge is a requirement. If your EQS or EQE refuses to charge, stops charging unexpectedly, charges much more slowly than it should, or experiences problems communicating with charging equipment, you are dealing with more than a minor annoyance.

Charging problems can involve the vehicle’s charging system, onboard charger, battery management system, software, electrical components, or other technology needed to transfer and manage power.

And when you depend on your Mercedes for transportation, being unable to reliably charge it can affect how and whether you can use the vehicle.

If you have repeatedly brought the vehicle to the dealership for a charging problem, keep those repair records. The pattern may become important when it comes to a potential California Lemon Law claim.

Battery and Range Problems

Your battery is the heart of an electric vehicle. Those problems involving battery performance can be frustrating for EQS and EQE owners.

You might notice that your vehicle is not achieving the range you reasonably expect or the estimated range suddenly drops. Keep in mind that not every difference between estimated and actual range means there’s a defect. But when it is a persistent problem that your dealership cannot properly diagnose or repair, then you need to take notice.

Software Issues

Your Mercedes relies on software to control and communicate with several systems throughout the vehicle. When that software does not work properly, you could experience:

  • Repeated warning messages
  • Infotainment failures
  • Navigation problems
  • Connectivity issues
  • Charging-system glitches
  • Problems with driver-assistance features
  • Electronic control failures
  • Features that stop working or work inconsistently
  • Software updates that fail to resolve recurring problems

This is more than “just a glitch.” If a recurring software defect affects vehicle function, safety features, charging capability, or overall usability, you need to take a closer look.

Electric Motors and Drive-System Problems

Your EQS or EQE does not have a traditional gasoline engine and transmission. This model relies on electric motors and drive systems to deliver power to the wheels.

Problems involving those systems can affect acceleration, power delivery, drivability, or the vehicle’s overall performance.

If the dealership has attempted repairs but the problem persists, you should never assume that an unfamiliar EV issue is something you have to live with.

Your Dealership Visits Are Important

If you have already taken your EQS or EQE back to the dealership several times, you want to keep every repair order.

Those records can help set a pattern of what you reported. Plus, it shows what the dealership attempted to repair and whether the same defect continued.

For these claims, you want to keep copies of your repair orders, warranty information, purchase or lease documents, invoices, and communications with the dealership or manufacturer.

Along with that, keep notes for your own timeline. You may want to write down when the charging problem occurred, when a warning appeared, how the vehicle behaved, and what happened after each repair. This documentation will be needed if you decide to move forward with a California Lemon Law claim.
